“Nothing we do is more important than hiring and developing people. At the end of the day, you bet on people, not on strategies.”
Design, Development and Maintenance of a public park website owned and managed by Sandwell Council, UK.
Sandwell is a large, multicultural and ethnically diverse metropolitan borough in the Black Country. Located west of Birmingham, it has a population of approximately 341,900 (2021 Census). It has six main towns: Oldbury, Rowley Regis, Smethwick, Tipton, Wednesbury and West Bromwich. The Council’s mission is to be a powerful force for promoting economic, environmental, health, social and cultural well-being. Sandwell Metropolitan Borough Council (SMBC) wanted to redesign and undergo maintenance of a dedicated website to promote Public Health across Sandwell.
On 07 June 2024, the Healthy Sandwell website went live within clear milestones and under the budget. SMBC expressed delight and satisfaction with the quality and efforts of our team. Our experts could meet the client’s expectation of creating an ideal website that perfectly satisfies all the requirements.
The client wanted to include cutting-edge and versatile features on the website that would improve user experience. We design a custom website with an easy-to-use interface to ensure information reaches the right audience.
During the discovery phase, Sweans worked closely with SMBC stakeholders to assess the website design, detail the site’s requirements, and formulate an implementation strategy that respected the council’s budget and timeline objectives. To speed up the development process, Sweans streamlined the website design, ensuring it remained simple yet effective, all while adhering to the council’s established brand guidelines.
Sweans undertook the creation of an online platform to foster and safeguard the well-being of the Sandwell community. This ambitious project required the mobilisation of a diverse, cross-disciplinary team. The team uniquely embodied creativity, innovation, and craftsmanship across various specialisations with internal relationships and project management skills.
The outcome is a sleek, mobile-first design that intuitively highlights Sandwell’s commitment to improving health and the quality of life for all individuals. It reduces unnecessary clicks and taps, enhances user comprehension, and ultimately assists residents in effortlessly completing their online journey.
Sweans structures its engineering engagements with a strong emphasis on client needs. In the Healthy Sandwell web project, our experienced team provided custom-made web development with expert consulting and dedicated WordPress support.
As a prominent contributor to the global open-source WordPress project, Sweans used its deep expertise with the Elementor Page Builder to create a seamless content creation experience. Our creative designers revised these designs to ensure they adhered to the best practices in accessible design.
Elementor Page Builder offers a cutting-edge drag-and-drop interface that helps site editors and content managers craft accessible, dynamic web page layouts. This tool allows users to add and rearrange various blocks and design patterns, encouraging creativity and accessibility.
Sweans has crafted the new Healthy Sandwell website by adhering to the latest Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) from W3C.
Accessibility is a fundamental principle in our development approach. From the technical architecture to the aesthetic design and content development, Sweans integrates countless tools to ensure website accessibility right from the start. The established colour palette specifies distinct hues for various site elements, such as typography, backgrounds and icons. This approach ensures brand consistency and enhances accessibility while ensuring the site design is effective in dark mode. Besides giving the site a modern and lively feel, dark mode facilitates easier interaction and readability for individuals with visual impairments.
By adhering strictly to these design principles and following the company’s accessibility guidelines, Sweans engineers have ensured that the Healthy Sandwell website complies with the high standards of the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG). The result is a dynamic, user-friendly site that fully complies with WCAG 2.2 level AA standards.
Sweans provided the Sandwell team with in-depth online training sessions throughout our development phase. These sessions offered a unique glimpse into the evolving site, showcasing the functionality of various components. From making straightforward updates to navigating more complex editing tasks, the Sandwell team gained a thorough understanding of the site’s operations. This transparent approach ensured the team remained aligned with the project’s progress and significantly enhanced their learning experience, preparing them for future content management responsibilities.
Before the official launch, Sweans conducted extensive training workshops to strengthen the confidence and proficiency of the Sandwell editorial team, ensuring they were fully equipped to manage the site independently.
WordPress helps site administrators oversee and update site content through an intuitive interface, eliminating the need for ongoing support from technology experts.
Collaborating with Sandwell, Sweans crafted a comprehensive WordPress content management training program, enabling authorities to handle website content.
The partnership between Sandwell and Sweans remains active, with continuous improvements to the website driven by user testing and data analysis.
Sweans performed thorough quality assurance checks before the big reveal, ensuring every detail was perfect. On June 07, 2024, the revamped Healthy Sandwell website went live. Within the first week post-launch, visitor numbers and engagement levels skyrocketed, witnessing a 203% increase in organic traffic compared to the previous site.
After the successful launch, Sandwell was thrilled to share that the following week had achieved their best performance. They achieved a record number of weekly visitors and experienced an all-time low bounce rate. Visitors using the new Healthy Sandwell website were more engaged, resulting in increased time spent.
